Why the Road to Emmaus?
I have always been so inspired by the Road to Emmaus Story, at the end of Luke’s Gospel (Luke 24:13-35). Jesus accompanied disciples along the way from Jerusalem to Emmaus. In the story, Jesus created space for these disciples to first be where they were. He deeply listened, then reminded them of their identity as God’s children, echoing words that were so familiar… words of inspiration, encouragement, and conviction, leading them to be the best versions of themselves.
As the evening approached, the presence of Jesus was so palpable to the disciples, yet they still weren’t completely sure it was actually Him. His presence was so irresistible, that they invited Jesus to join them for dinner! It was there, in that powerful Eucharistic moment, they realized who he was, Jesus, the Son of God!
In turn, they recalled how they felt all along the way…and exclaimed, Jesus, showed us the way He accompanies us and how we can accompany others in this life of complex, human experiences. He meets us where we are and encourages us to draw near to Him, learn from Him, and notice how He is living and active in our daily lives. The disciples’ Road is our Road too.
May God bless you today and always,
Heather
